satellite

Keeping in touch with the outside world is the second biggest chanllenge facing the team.

Complicated satellite links and mobile terminals enables Chris to send the latest news straight to this site where it was updated accordingly.

Information is sent via satellite above the Indian Ocean to Eik in Norway. From there it follows a landline to Britain.

As you can see above, the team have two methods of sending up-to-the-minute pictures and text back from the heart of Tibet to the UK and then to the rest of the world via the WWW. The Agfa / The Newton Message Pad 130 / Mobiq Satellite phone will be used high up on the summit ridge. This has been possible thanks to Logica who have devloped the software for the very small lightweight Newton to act as the link between the camera and the Mobiq satellite phone.

While at base camp the more powerful and faster combination of the Olympus Camedia C-800L/ Apple Powerbook 3400 / Saturn BP Terminal will be used as the main communications system. All systems will be powered either by Solar Panels specially customised by Gerald Taylor Associates or by Lithium cells supplied by Ever Ready. The Newton Message pad is powered by a KISS LUNA panel.
